Lughnasadg - The First Harvest

   Next weekend is Lughnasadh - the beginning of the harvest of the grains and this signals the slow departure of the God. He gives his energy to the Earth Mother to invigorate the grain that feeds us. The modern day state and county fairs with their contests and celebrations are the modern day reminders of the Celtic Games of Tailtiu, the Earth Mother being honored by the Sun God Lugh at her funeral, for with the harvest in, the Earth is dying. The Sun too is waning in strength, and the blackberry and blueberry pies are baked to honor the God changing into his Dark Aspect.
   Now is the time to begin making your Corn Dolly. She was made from the last sheaf of wheat (called corn in Europe), harvested in a field, and was paraded for all to see. The sheaf, called the Old Woman, was placed in your home as a refuge for the spirit of the grain until she was dressed as the Bride of Imbolc and plowed back into the field at Ostara. This dolly represents the Goddess in her Crone aspect, and placing her in the home protects the family until winter is over. She was kept high in the rafters by the hearth to watch over the home. Making a corn dolly at Lughnasadh brings some of the old ways back into our modern life.
