Yarrow

    Yarrow is a highly prolific plant considered a weed by most gardeners. However, if you have the space it is worth cultivating a small patch. You can prevent it taking by removing the flowers before they seed although you will have to diligent! Some of its fold names give an idea of how highly it used to be prized: Solider's Woundwort, Knight's Milfoil, Herbe Militaris, Bloodwort, Staunchweed, Saguinary. Others give an indication of its association with the Craft: Devil's Nettle and Devil's Plaything. Yarrow was used to stop bleeding and to dress wounds to speed healing: the leaves were rolled up and inserted to stop nose bleeds. Conversely, it made into a poultice and placed over the nose and sinuses to induce a nosebleed to relieve headaches.  Such poultices can also be used to ease bleeding piles. Yarrow tea is excellent for heavy colds and cleanses the urinary system. Yarrow was used to make beer which was though to be more intoxicating than that made from hops.
   Magically Yarrow is associated with Venus and is used in workings for love, courage and protection, and to develop psychic powers. Carry Yarrow for protection and to attract friendship and love, and to regain contact with lost relatives. Place it under an external doormat to deter unwanted callers. A tea made from Yarrow flowers is said to improve psychic powers. Burn dried Yarrow leaves to cleanse the house or make the stems into a smudge stick to exorcise negativity from a person. If a couple eat Yarrow at their wedding it is said to ensure 7 years of happiness.
