Mother Earth Water Walk

The Mother Earth Water Walk began in the spring of 2003, when a group of Ojibwe women and their supporters walked all the way around Lake Superior, calling attention to pollution of the fresh water of the Great Lakes. Josephine Mandamin, an elder and grandmother leading the walks, said: "Our water is not for sale! The Great Lakes are precious and sacred to our being, as water is one of the basic elements needed for all life to exist."
Each year the Waterwalkers have continued to walk around another of the Great Lakes - Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, Lake Erie - until in 2008 they completed the circumnaviation of all five lakes. Ho Waterwalkers!
Mandimin says, "The walk was for the next generations. They will know, Mother Earth knows, that we walked with the water for all creation."

I was so very thrilled to meet the Waterwalkers when the travelled around Lake Huron. I work at a Native Cultural Centre and we provided meals and assistance to the grandmothers who gave up so much personally to be part of something they felt compelled to be part of. Gchi-Miigwetch for posting!

I envy you having the opportunity of meeting these wonderful women. Thank you for providing nourishment for them in their quest.
