As the fourth sign of the zodiac, Cancer represents the fourth stage in the evolution of humanity and one's place in the universe. In Cancer the need is not one of individual survival as it was in the first three signs. Here, it is eternal survival through perpetuation of the species. It is the sign of fertility and nurture, and Cancerians have strong identification with these matters in one form or another.
