Witch Names
Many people like to take a magickal or Witch name when they enter the Craft. This is thought to originate from the time when Witches were persecuted, and it would have been safer if people could not give real names to the authorities. But there is doubt about this being true. People would have known each other anyway. The belief that knowing someone's true name will give you more power over them is far more widespread and vastly predates the Witch Hunts. Many Witches feel that the giving or taking of a Craft name reflects the feeling that they are starting afresh, almost as a new person. In some traditions the Witch name is given as part of the second degree Initiation Ritual; in others it is a separate Rite. In some traditions a person may select their own name, and in others the name is chosen for them. Many Solitary Witches also take a name of their choice, not to be confused in these days of the internet with a pen or e-mail name.
While there are no rules on the selection of a Witch name there are some fairly guidelines. Read up on your chosen name, as some deities, heroes, or heroines demonstrate attributes you may not wish to invite into your life. For the sake of everyone's sanity, choose something spell-able and prononouceable. Try not to select one of the may over-used names. And lastly, it is considered self-aggrandisement to take the name of one of the 'major' Goddesses or Gods, such as Isis or Herne.
